Traditions can be comforting and nice, but sometimes it’s fun to break out of the mold and try something new at Thanksgiving. An easy way to break tradition is to try new drinks before, during or after the Thanksgiving meal. Add some alcohol, sugar or spices, and enjoy the glow of the holidays with your family and friends. Here are a few new drink ideas to try:
Non-Traditional Drinks to Try at Thanksgiving
- Orange, Mint and Rose Refresher: An energizing and refreshing drink to enjoy before or during Thanksgiving dinner. The mint will freshen the breath, while the orange will enervate, and rose just makes everything lovelier. Gently crush about 25 mint leaves in a mixing glass. Pour ¾-cup orange juice, 2 drops rosewater, and ¾-cup seltzer over mint, and stir.
- Port Elderflower Cocktail: Hosts often serve a coffee drink with dessert, but why not a cocktail to lighten the load? Add ice to a cocktail shaker and then add 1.5 ounces of rum, 1 ounce of port and ¾ ounce of St. Germain Elderflower Liqueur. Shake and enjoy.
- Barbajada: Worried about the post-dinner drowsiness after Thanksgiving? That won’t happen with barbajada! After your guests drink this Italian chocolate-coffee mixture, the conversation will just keep flowing. Make coffee or espresso. Combine ¼-cup cocoa powder and ¼-cup sugar in a bowl. Heat up 1 ½-cups milk until steaming. Add dry mixture and 2/3 cups coffee or espresso. Use a frother or whisk to whip up the barbajada until very frothy. Pour into warm mugs and top with whipped cream.
- Better Than Pumpkin Pie Martini: Crush one graham cracker in a shallow dish. Brush honey on to the rim of a martini glass, and dip glasses in honey graham cracker crumbs. Mix together 1/3-cup milk and 2 tbsp. pumpkin puree in a cocktail shaker. Add ¾ jigger vanilla vodka, ½ jigger creme de cacao and ice. Close and shake. Pour into martini glasses and sprinkle with pumpkin pie spice.
